Almost Two

This weekend I caught myself telling someone that Phoebe was "almost two." It caught me off guard. It's true, of course, and it's much more precise than just saying she's "one," but I was still surprised to hear it coming out of my mouth. Almost two! My baby!

The truth is, I'm only the teensiest bit nostalgic for her babyhood. I love the age she's at now.

When I come home from work she runs to me and says, "Mommm-ie!" with a huge smile, and when I pick her up she wraps her arms tightly around my neck. This greeting almost makes going to work worth it.

She can count to ten -- "Wan. Two. Free. Four. Fize. Sik. Senen. Eat. Nahn. Ten!" But if she hears someone else counting, she'll hide her eyes, then say, "Here I come! Where are you?"

She loves her baby dolls. She carries them around, she hugs them, she feeds them "juice." If she drops a doll, she picks it up and says, "I sowee! Okay?" She also says "I sowee!" whenever she hurts herself.

She can sing Twinkle Twinkle, The Wheels on the Bus, and Happy Birthday.

She's very precise in her commands. If I'm blocking her way, she'll say, "Push!" If she wants me to come with her, she'll say, "Walk!" If she wants something out of reach, she'll say, "I touch that!" If she wants to be picked up, she'll say, "Carry me!" We also hear a lot of "Stop!" if Mallory is in her vicinity. She will often congratulate herself for following the commands of others -- e.g., if I tell her to sit down in her highchair, she'll do it and then say, "Good girl!"

Her favorite movie is "Lellow," aka Stuart Little.

She loves lollipops (pop-pops), cucumbers (which she calls celery), tomatoes, and French fries. In fact the instant we walked into a restaurant last Saturday night she said, "Yay! Fries!" (Unfortunately it was a Tex-Mex place so she had to settle for chips.)

When Chris tells her goodnight, she blows him two kisses. Every night, it's two kisses.

She is very attached to a wool hat that my mother-in-law knitted. Whenever she sees it she happily yells, "Hat!" and wears it around for a while. Even when it's really hot, or her hair is wet from her bath, or at other times that you wouldn't think would be conducive to wool-hat-wearing.

She also occasionally uses a pacifier, which she calls her "mouse," a mispronunciation for mouth.

She likes to recite the names of her Parent's Morning Out friends: "Gabi...and Joffie (Jeffrey) and Nenna (Sienna)..."

She doesn't much like to be cuddled. She's very stubborn. She has the funniest laugh I've ever heard. She's almost two.

I can hardly wait to see her. She has grown up since I last saw her.

I ask you

This is my garden: Or rather, this is the patch of soil that was my garden last summer. It produced millions of tomatoes, dozens of green peppers, a handful of cucumbers, and two puny watermelons. I do not wish to repeat last summer's vegetable bounty, because most of said bounty went to waste. Nor, however, do I want this patch of soil to remain brown and bare throughout the summer, because it's unattractive. So, what do I plant here, in the shrubbery/flowery vein? Keep in mind that I do not have a green thumb. Also, I don't want to spend a lot of money. Also, this area is in full sun most of the day. And it's really hot. And sometimes we get rabbits. Any advice? To thank you in advance, I give you these goofy photos of my children and their homemade parfaits (which Mallory persisted in calling "specialinis").

the closet

Amy has challenged me to list 8 things that are hidden in the back of my closet. I try not to actually look to closely at the back of my closet, so these are my closest guesses: 1. At least three no-longer-needed diaper bags. 2. An outfit that I've been meaning to return to Land's End for at least six months now. 3. One of our wedding pictures, which has a broken frame which I keep meaning to replace. 4. Shoes, shoes, shoes, shoes. 5. Possibly a pair of fuzzy slippers. I miss those fuzzy slippers. Maybe I should brave the mess and go try to find them. 6. Baby blankets. 7. A few small toys that I meant to stick in the girls' Christmas stockings. Maybe next year. 8. And I'm guessing, a bunch of mismatched socks. My closet isn't very interesting, I'm afraid.

The Golf Course

There was a miniature golf course in my grandparent’s house. There were, in fact, lots of cool-if-kitschy things in my grandparents’ house. There were swinging saloon doors between the kitchen and the master suite. There was a toilet seat made of transparent plastic, with ticket stubs from horse races embedded therein. There was a globe wine bar (pictured!). There was a mounted goat head (the goat was named Bucky) on whose antlers my granddad hung his golf caps. There was a stuffed pheasant whose chest feathers were smooth as silk. There was a kitchen bar of green marbled formica and swively kitchen chairs of red pleather. There was an automatic ice dispenser on the refrigerator, which was a rare and awe-inspiring thing in the 1970’s. There was a mirrored tray holding bejeweled perfume bottles with atomizers in the guest bathroom. There were two huge oil paintings – one of my aunt, with beautifully frosted hair, holding a Pug, one of my older sister as a toddler sitting on a John De...
