She may be a 'fraidy cat, but she's also a good egg

We sent out invitations for Mallory's birthday party a few days ago. Her birthday is a whole month away, but it's a Build-a-Bear party at the busiest mall in town, so we decided to hold it a few weeks early, before the Christmas madness began. (Which is not even a little bit the point of this story.) Anyway, she was allowed to invite four girls. She named three girls I knew were her very good friends, and then she named a fourth. "I didn't know you were friends with her," I said.

"We didn't used to be," Mallory said, meaning herself and her other friends. "But then a bunch of other girls in our class started being really mean to her, so we decided that she could be our new best friend."

Moments like these make parenting totally worthwhile.
